One day I read about this in "Mother Earth News" probably in the mid to late 1960's. My Mom saw me and commented on the fact that I was doing the same thing she had been doing. Then I remembered seeing her do this. She learned it from her mom. Much of what we are trying to do today is akin to what they did during the depression and later on WW1 & WW2. It is probably in the Foxfire Books too.
