How do you replace irreplacable things like hiking shoes

I found that all this hype about fashionable clothese was all very well and someone even wrote a supposedly super article on eco fashion on our website but can one actually use alternative fibre like one uses cotton. Can jute actually be put in the washing machine? I heard that it can only be dry cleaned, is that true?
What then happens to traditional techniques, skills, etc. India has a huge variety of textile styles and weaving patterns and fabrics, a lot of fabrics are rather cruel esp the making of silk. But i can't help but wonder what will happen to the weavers when they stop weaving the beautiful banarasis and the kanjeevarams, what will happen to those styles?
