Last year, the Humane Society of the United States helped bring about the demise of the Destin Deep Water Shark Tournament. Now, the group that bills itself as the nation’s largest animal protection organization has set its sights on the shark division of the Destin Fishing Rodeo. The Humane Society, in a news release after a photo of an 844-pound mako shark was shown Oct. 15 in the Northwest Florida Daily News, requests rodeo organizers “permanently end the event’s shark division.†“They can’t keep doing this,†said Gail Powell, a Santa Rosa Beach resident who contacted the Humane Society.
