In Bali, this December, the world’s leaders and diplomats will meet once more…this time to determine the mandate for what will be the next and most dangerous step in furthering international climate action. Bush and his Big Oil soaked negotiators want to replace binding international targets with airy promises and voluntary, aspirational goals. It would be folly to let him do it when he has so little time in office. We have one response. We are sending a Youth Delegation of Conscience to the Bali negotiations.

Warnings From a Warming World: Hurricane Felix Makes Landfall as Second Category 5 Hurricane
Making landfall today as a devastating Category 5 storm, Hurricane Felix is the second Cat 5 Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in as many weeks, carving a path of destruction across Central America.

The Human Face of Climate Change (Or Why I’m Fasting Today)
When you think about the climate crisis, which image, a polar bear cub or a human child stands out as the face of climate change? Global warming certainly poses an unprecedented environmental and ecological catastrophe. But the climate crisis doesn’t just threaten cute and cuddly animals and their less charismatic cousins. I would argue that the real face of climate change is, or should be, a human face. Today, I join over eleven hundred others in the Climate Emergency Fast to raise awareness of these human impacts of climate change.

Remembering Katrina
More than a story about global warming, Hurricane Katrina is a story about a people left to die by their government before, during, and well-after a disaster most of us could never imagine. Last November my friend Jeca and I made the trip down to New Orleans to gut houses and help in the recovery effort. Below are two stories from my experience posted in my blog last year.

World Betting the Farm on Carbon Trading?
Do we really think that is either morally acceptable or feasible for the developed world to offset 100% of their emissions through emissions trading? Or is it just Greenwashing..on a planetary scale?

Pope Gets Green!
Recognizing youth engagement with environmental issues, the Catholic Church and the the Pope held their first-ever eco-friendly event. Speaking in front of half a million mostly young people, he said: “A decisive ’yes’ is needed in decisions to safeguard creation" A participants’ kit included backpacks made of recyclable material, a flashlight operated by a crank instead of batteries, and color-coded trash bags so their personal garbage could be easily recycled. Meals were served on biodegradable plates.

Online Communities Make Change Stopping Climate Change.
Major online communities are becoming a huge force in making Global Warming a political priority. While there has been a lot of ink spilled about how online communities are changing the face of politics, the fact is that they really raise the profile of ordinary people’s concerns. Well, people are concerned about Global Warming, because there are only about 10 years left to get a handle on the problem.

Bjørn Lomborg Flip-Flops Over Cool It!, Apologizes for “Disturbing†and “Reckless Hyperboleâ€
There are some shocking revelations in Lomborg’s new interview with Salon over his new book. Lomborg apologizes for his “reckless hyperbole†in “comparing Gore, Bill McKibben, the Natural Resources Defense Council, New Scientist magazine to the leaders of the Inquisition“, admitting in retrospect ‘That’s actually a little disturbing‘.

Into the Eye of a Storm
Here in the UK, aviation has become the political hot potato it surely should be. Getting on a plane is the single most environmentally damaging thing that you can do and flying is already the fastest growing cause of global warming. Over the last year, activists from Plane Stupid, the group I helped establish, have broken into airports, occupied airline offices and disrupted aviation industry conferences.

NASA Satellite Scandal Exposed by Climate Muckrakers.
In a shocking abuse of politics over science, NASA has mothballed the most significant climate monitoring project of the decade. This story exposes the details of this abuse of power and the launch of a muckraking investigation into this scandal.

The New Development
The climate movement has been going about its business fighting coal plants, promoting wind energy, and working for comprehensive carbon reduction policies. Suddenly, there’s a new development. The new development is not about limiting growth, it’s about redefining prosperity. Not going to change the world? Let’s scale up. It’s time to forge a development paradigm that actually works: one that empowers people, strengthens communities, and sustains the world.

In China, Global Environmental Injustice Kills Millions.
In the West, we fundamentally misunderstand the role of pollution and the environment in China. We also don’t recognize the global injustice being conducted in the name of our prosperity in China. China has become the environmental sacrifice zone for the global economy. Toxic air and water are killing an estimated 710,000 to 760,000 Chinese each year. In China, they know the power of online media and the political fallout from the environmental injustice the Chinese people are facing from the global economy. Do we?

Our National Climate Target: A Worthy Discussion
A provocative question. Is a 80% by 2050 national emissions reductions target actually going to prevent the worst impacts of global warming? Will we hit dangerous tipping points? Are there risks we are taking by trying to act too slowly? This post takes a hard look at certain assumptions the U.S. Climate movement has taken.

Warnings from a Warming World: Hurricane Dean Breaks Records, Third Most Intense Storm at Landfa
This articles explores the trend of stronger and more dangerous hurricanes in a warming world. What is the connection, is there a clear pattern? How do you think we should talk about it?
