Pacific Gas & Electric’s Tidal Greenwashing
Hospitals commit to a healthy planet
It seems only logical to consider the health of the planet at places where we care for the health of our souls and bodies.
But when the people of Newburg, Oregon needed a new hospital, there were financial considerations as well. Luckily when they decided to build green, they actually saved a little green while doing it.
Church coalitions want greater political action on climate change
It seems Green evangelicals are becoming increasingly politically engaged. Rev. Jim Ball, president of the Evangelical Environmental Network teamed up with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Union for Reform Judaism to fully support the recent Lieberman-Warner Climate federal cap and trade bill. And there is even a new Green evangelical magazine called “Creation Care.â€
Now we also have a nascent green churches movement in America. Last November, the National Association of Evangelicals and a U.S.
EPA to industry: don’t tell us if you dump 5,000 lbs of toxins each year
Since 1986, it has been established law that you have a right to know how much companies pollute each year. But the Toxics Release Inventory is now more lax. Companies can now dump up to 5,000 pounds of toxins and not even file a report.
Green campaign from American Airlines never takes off
American Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers, was supposed to roll out a new green marketing campaign sometime in this past August. Perhaps AA needed to rethink their green marketing strategy in light of the high profile protests at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Kim Jong-il killing with coal
The environment is threatened as nations and oil companies jockey for North Korean coal. Kim Jong-il is opening up his dictatorship to oil exploitation. Now that the Korean summit with the South has been postponed until October, environmental groups have a chance to get their act together and demand oversight of the dictatorship’s fossil fuel production. We cannot leave it to Team America to save the Amur leopard, the Asiatic black bear and the Siberian tiger.
Marriott’s green campaign on YouTube
Marriott set up a web 2.0 contest called “Eco-Cation†whereby contestants could submit sustainability videos to YouTube and win a trip to Costa Rica. We have checked the site and there are only two user responses. Either the contest was not successfully marketed or Marriott has since deleted the user content.

Green gains at major hospitality summit
Every year the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) brings together thousands of hotel executives, investors, developers and consultants to discuss the latest trends and opportunities in the hospitality industry.
Today Travel Daily News reported that this year’s Summit, to be held January 28-30, 2008 in Los Angeles, will focus on developing and managing green hotels and resorts.
Green hotel boom in Beijing
Air pollution can be so bad in Beijing that some events at the 2008 games may be postponed.
So it is no surprise that Chinese State officials are now promoting sustainability initiatives where many first time visitors will reside–hotels. Olympic travelers now have the option of staying at “Gold or Silver Leaf Green Hotels.“
WWF creates virtual online island to promote conservation
Want to get in touch with nature but don’t want to leave your cubicle?
Now you can teleport to Conservation Island, a virtual world built by the World Wildlife Fund into the popular online computer game called Second Life. Your digital self, called an avatar, can chat with an elephant or a panda about important environmental issues in the real world.
