Governor Valentina Matviyenko sent a representative to join environmental group Greenpeace on a tour of the most polluted areas of the city’s waterways on Monday because she was unable to attend in person due to other commitments, Fontanka.ru reported.

Governor Valentina Matviyenko has turned down the chance to see for herself the extent of pollution in St. Petersburg’s waterways after environmental group Greenpeace invited her to take part in an inspection of the Neva in one of its boats.

The city prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation in connection with twelve illegal drains channeling industrial discharge into the River Neva. The investigations were prompted by a new report by the international environmental pressure group Greenpeace.
