Students at the University of California Davis Hybrid Vehicle Research Center have been creating plug-in hybrids for national competitions for some time. "Team Fate" members Jungers and Kaufman describe how they "gut" the drive train of a standard vehicle, replacing it with an electric motor, a bank of batteries, continuously variable transmission, and some smart electronics. The resulting vehicle runs on electricity, assisted by a much smaller flex-fuel internal combustion engine only when needed.

High School Students petition to get recycling in their school
Prince Georges County Maryland borders the District of Columbia and is one of the largest and wealthiest Counties in the State of Maryland. With hundreds of public school, the amount of recyclables is in the tons/week. Yet, there is not recycling anywhere to be found at the schools and the kids have taken notice. Students at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville Md, formed an enviornmental task force and put out a petition to get recycling in their schools.

Now they have announced the launch of a new program - “Chegg for Trees†that will ensure that a tree is planted in a needy area every time a textbook is rented via the Textbookflix.com service. Chegg is delivering this program in partnership with the newly founded Eco-Libris, an organization that seeks to balance out the trees cut down for the production of books by planting trees in developing countries.
