A mobile EPA air-monitoring laboratory recently acquired a rooftop wind turbine, becoming, as its on-board scientist puts it, “The Wind in the Winnebago.” When conditions are right, the turbine can charge up the Winnebago’s on-board batteries enough to power the entire mobile lab for eight hours “without a single wisp of generator exhaust.”

Wind energy in Florida might have some promise after all. This year’s renewable energy technologies grants from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection include two note-worthy investments in wind: $2.5 million for Florida Power and Light (FPL) to build the state’s first wind-energy facility in St. Lucie County, and $123,868 to Progress Energy Florida to install small-scale, inland wind-evaluation turbines at five different locations in the state.

The Department of Energy recently released a study claiming that wind power could make up as much as 20% of our nation’s electricity portfolio by 2030.  Given that wind only account for about 1% of our power sources today, that would be a huge increase.  More wind power means fewer fossil fuels and fewer harmful carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
