A Massachusetts based company, Metabolix, just figured out how to grow plastic inside a plant. By mixing the genes of a few different species Metabolix was able to coax switch grass into growing it's proprietary bioplastic in significant amounts right it's leaves! The new plastic can be used in manufacturing everything from credit cards to packaging materials.

Mazda Motor Corporation and Hiroshima University are researching together to develop a brand new “green” plastic material from cellulosic biomass. They want to use it in vehicles by 2013.

Back in August Sustainable is Good reported on new gift cards Target was selling made from a biodegradable plastic called Mirel. At the time we ran the original story, shortly after the cards were announced, we didn't have any photos of the actual cards.
