The President has instituted a wide range of off-shore and land-based drilling to mine for energy in an attempt to appease the public, and in an act which even the oil companies seem mystified by. For example, supporters of shale oil extration point out that the technology doesn't exist to retrieve the oil. Meanwhile, we risk more disasters like the Exxon Valdez spill, which you may be surpised to know was largely paid for by taxes, especially after the Supreme Court slashed Exxon's punitive damages. Bush Administration Approves Expanded Wyoming Drilling
(via greenchemistry.wordpress.com)
Federal land management officials recommend almost 4,400 new natural gas wells be drilled in western Wyoming, an area where energy mining is already blamed for increased air and water pollution. The amount of natural gas to be harvested is supposedly equal to about one year's supply for the US. The damage to wildlife, their habitat and the environment is expected to be significant. The Bush administration is pushing for these decisions.
