Cause Related marketing is hot again...that's good news for those of us who care about green

Quite a few times now we have talk about Wal-Mart and their “green” efforts, but today I bear news about another big box store, Target.

Washington-based outdoor company REI is using new biodegradable gift cards made by NatureWorks. The gift cards are made from PLA which is a corn-based bio-plastic.

Minneapolis-based Target Stores is launching nine natural/organic product brands in a major nationwide launch this March. The discount retailer known for its hip side will be launching the new products in all 1,591 stores across the country.

Eight of the nine brands scheduled to launch are new to Target the ninth, Burt's Bees is already available at the retailer.

Target stores are carrying bioplastic gift cards in all 1600 stores for the holiday season. The cards, available in twelve different holiday designs (see photos) are made from Mirel, a biobased plastic from Cambridge Massachusetts-based Metabolix.

Last week Target, the nations fifth largest retailer announced a comprehensive plan to reduce and eliminate PVC plastic from its products and packaging. The announcement will have a major impact on Target's packaging operations where PVC is commonly used in clamshell type packaging.

Back in August Sustainable is Good reported on new gift cards Target was selling made from a biodegradable plastic called Mirel. At the time we ran the original story, shortly after the cards were announced, we didn't have any photos of the actual cards.
