Boeing has just shown off the world's first hydrogen fuel cell hybrid electric manned airplane to fly, a zero emissions vehicle, which climbed to 3,300-feet and cruised at 62 mph.

The concept hypersonic jet has been developed by Reaction Engine and it is aptly called the A2. It is a Mach-5 (3,400 mph) wicked aircraft capable of holding 300 passengers and produces, get this, ZERO carbon emissions!

Virgin Group boss Richard Branson said on Friday he would aim to avoid buying fuel-thirsty four-engined airplanes in future for both economic and environmental reasons. Virgin recently purchased 15 of Boeing's new fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner jets which use approximately 27 percent less fuel per passenger. Branson has also said that Virgin will begin using biofuels in 747's sometime next year. The company already allows customers to help offset their travel during ticket purchasing in some countries.
