The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced yesterday that its Billion Tree Campaign to Grow into the Seven Billion Tree Campaign.

 A new organization simply called Plant A Billion Trees has set out their goal in their name. Over 279,000 trees have been planted though $1 donations. 

Tree-Nation is an ecological project with a focused objective: To plant 8 million trees in Niger, Africa to fight desertification. Large-scale plantation of trees will increase the land's productivity and re-generate the soil. It is also a is an online community in which you can buy your own tree and become its guardian.

The Save the Redwoods League is ninety years old this year, and to celebrate, it’s giving the San Francisco Botanical Gardens ten grand to help protect a group of redwoods in Golden Gate Park. “Less than five percent of the ancient redwood forest remains today,” explained Save the Redwoods Executive Director Ruskin Hartley. “In fact, there are trees on private land that are in danger of being logged, so the redwoods continue to be threatened.”

Green news from Canada! Raincoast Books, best known in green circles as the Canadian publisher of the green edition of the latest Harry Potter books, is partnering with Eco-Libris in a joint campaign: 'Buy a Book, Plant a Tree'. Raincoast signed up 80 Canadian retailers who will be selling a wide range of environmentally themed books through April 2008. These books come with Eco-Libris stickers stating that one tree will be planted for each one of them.
