Nokia announces plans to introduce 40 green phones. Also unveils e-cycling program.

Green sells, whether the product in question is a hybrid car or a laptop computer. Tech firms know this, but they also face growing scepticism as a result of the the deluge of greenwash we are all being subjected to.

Nokia have at last revealed a mobile phone concept made from recycled materials. The only thing we're concerend about is that, if it's that environmentally-friendly, when on earth will it go into production?

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and IBM are initiating an effort in partnership with Nokia, Pitney Bowes, and Sony have come together to help the environment, unleashing dozens of innovative, environmentally responsible patents to the public domain. The pledged portfolio, dubbed the "Eco-Patent Commons," is available on a dedicated, public Web site hosted by the WBCSD (http://www.wbcsd.org/web/epc).

IBM, Nokia, Sony and bulk-mailing equipment manufacturer Pitney-Bowes have together donated patents to the Eco-patent Commons, an organisation set up to share the patents for technology with environmental benefits.

The Nokia 3110 evolve! It’s not only powered up by a charger which is 94 per cent more efficient than the Energy Star requirements (and which will be added to the entire Nokia line over the next year), even the covers are made from bio-sourced materials (the plastic is made from plants, rather than from petrol).

I don’t know whether to applaud this or be very, very afraid :). The Nokia Research Center has cooked up this interesting device; the Nokia Eco Sensor. Aside from making calls from the solar powered device, you’ll be able to collect and share environmental data. Social networking for smog readings? Interesting.
