The President has instituted a wide range of off-shore and land-based drilling to mine for energy in an attempt to appease the public, and in an act which even the oil companies seem mystified by. For example, supporters of shale oil extration point out that the technology doesn't exist to retrieve the oil. Meanwhile, we risk more disasters like the Exxon Valdez spill, which you may be surpised to know was largely paid for by taxes, especially after the Supreme Court slashed Exxon's punitive damages.
